How Vermont sets its holidays
These are the days off for Vermont state government employees (executive branch). They come from 1 V.S.A. § 371; collective bargaining agreements (3 V.S.A. § 904). Private employers, banks and schools in Vermont may follow their own schedules.
Weekend rule
A holiday that falls on a Saturday is observed the Friday before; one that falls on a Sunday is observed the following Monday.
In 2026, 2 holidays are observed on a different day because of the weekend: Independence Day and Bennington Battle Day.
Compared with the federal calendar
Vermont adds 3 holidays that the federal calendar does not have: Town Meeting Day, Bennington Battle Day, and Day after Thanksgiving.
Every federal holiday is also a Vermont holiday.
Listed under a Vermont name: Juneteenth National Independence Day as “Juneteenth”, Columbus Day as “Indigenous Peoples' Day”, and Veterans Day as “Veterans' Day”.
Special cases in 2026: Juneteenth (only some bargaining units), Bennington Battle Day (only some bargaining units), and Indigenous Peoples' Day (only some bargaining units).
