How South Dakota sets its holidays

Weekend rule
Holidays that fall on a Saturday or Sunday are not moved to a weekday.
Some South Dakota holidays follow their own weekend rule:
- New Year's Day: on a Saturday: the Friday before; on a Sunday: the following Monday.
- Juneteenth: on a Saturday: the Friday before; on a Sunday: the following Monday.
- Independence Day: on a Saturday: the Friday before; on a Sunday: the following Monday.
- Veterans' Day: on a Saturday: the Friday before; on a Sunday: the following Monday.
- Christmas Day: on a Saturday: the Friday before; on a Sunday: the following Monday.
In 2026, one holiday is observed on a different day because of the weekend: Independence Day.
Compared with the federal calendar
South Dakota adds a holiday that the federal calendar does not have: Native Americans' Day.
It does not list this federal holiday: Columbus Day. State offices are open on that day unless another rule applies.
Listed under a South Dakota name: Presidents' Day as “Lincoln's and Washington's Birthdays”, Juneteenth National Independence Day as “Juneteenth”, and Veterans Day as “Veterans' Day”.
