Alabama state holidays 2026

How Alabama sets its holidays

These are the days off for Alabama state government employees (executive branch). They come from Ala. Code § 1-3-8. Private employers, banks and schools in Alabama may follow their own schedules.

Weekend rule

A holiday that falls on a Saturday is observed the Friday before; one that falls on a Sunday is observed the following Monday.

In 2026, one holiday is observed on a different day because of the weekend: Independence Day.

Compared with the federal calendar

Alabama adds 4 holidays that the federal calendar does not have: George Washington's and Thomas Jefferson's Birthday, Confederate Memorial Day, Jefferson Davis' Birthday, and Day after Thanksgiving.

It does not list this federal holiday: Presidents' Day. State offices are open on that day unless another rule applies.

Listed under a Alabama name: Martin Luther King Jr. Day as “Martin Luther King Jr.'s and Robert E. Lee's Birthday”, Juneteenth National Independence Day as “Juneteenth”, and Columbus Day as “Columbus Day / Fraternal Day / American Indian Heritage Day”.
