How West Virginia sets its holidays
These are the days off for West Virginia state government employees (executive branch). They come from W. Va. Code § 2-2-1. Private employers, banks and schools in West Virginia may follow their own schedules.
Weekend rule
A holiday that falls on a Saturday is observed the Friday before; one that falls on a Sunday is observed the following Monday.
In 2027, 3 holidays are observed on a different day because of the weekend: West Virginia Day, Independence Day, and Christmas Day.
Compared with the federal calendar
West Virginia adds 2 holidays that the federal calendar does not have: West Virginia Day and Lincoln's Day.
It does not list this federal holiday: Juneteenth National Independence Day. State offices are open on that day unless another rule applies.
