How Maryland sets its holidays
These are the days off for Maryland state government employees (executive branch). They come from State Pers. & Pens. § 9-201; Gen. Prov. § 1-111; DBM holiday schedule. Private employers, banks and schools in Maryland may follow their own schedules.
Weekend rule
A holiday that falls on a Saturday is observed the Friday before; one that falls on a Sunday is observed the following Monday.
In 2027, 3 holidays are observed on a different day because of the weekend: Juneteenth, Independence Day, and Christmas Day.
Compared with the federal calendar
Maryland adds a holiday that the federal calendar does not have: American Indian Heritage Day.
Every federal holiday is also a Maryland holiday.
Listed under a Maryland name: Juneteenth National Independence Day as “Juneteenth” and Veterans Day as “Veterans' Day”.
24/7 agencies may give the holidays at other times.
Legal holidays without a day off
Maryland law also names these days, but they are not days off for state employees, so offices are open:
- Lincoln's Birthday:
- Maryland Day:
- Good Friday:
- Defenders' Day:
