How Hawaii sets its holidays

These are the days off for Hawaii state government employees (executive branch). They come from HRS 8-1; DHRD state holiday schedule. Private employers, banks and schools in Hawaii may follow their own schedules.

Weekend rule

A holiday that falls on a Saturday is observed the Friday before; one that falls on a Sunday is observed the following Monday.

In 2027, 2 holidays are observed on a different day because of the weekend: Independence Day and Christmas Day.

Compared with the federal calendar

Hawaii adds 4 holidays that the federal calendar does not have: Good Friday, Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole Day, King Kamehameha I Day, and Statehood Day.

It does not list these federal holidays: Juneteenth National Independence Day and Columbus Day. State offices are open on those days unless another rule applies.
